The 10th
Panchen Erdeni and Other Well£Known Personages Advocate
the Leadership of the Central Government and Long for Tibet's Liberation
¡¡¡¡After the founding of the People's ? Republic of China on October
1, 1949, the 10th Panchen Lama telegrammed Chairman Mao Zedong and
Commander-in-Chief Zhu De, expressing his support for the Central
People's Government and urging the Central People's Government to
liberate Tibet as early as possible. The telegram read:
¡¡¡¡Respected
Chairman Mao Zedong and Commander-in Chief Zhu De.
With sagacious and undaunted strategy, you have been fighting for
the survival of our country and people. Wherever your troops arrive,
the people are greatly excited. For generations, the Panchen has
been treated most generously and bestowed with many honors by the
state government. Over the last 20 or 50 years, I have never slackened
my efforts to defend the territorial integrity of Tibet, but nothing
has been achieved, for which I feel most guilty. I am now staying
in Qinghai, waiting for the order to return to Tibet. Thanks to
the leadership of Your Excellencies, northwest China has been liberated
and the Central People's Government has been establishments that
all the people who are proud of the country find highly inspiring.
These accomplishments will surely bring happiness to the people
and make it possible for the nation to stand on its feet again;
and with these accomplishments the liberation of Tibet is only a
matter of time. On behalf of all the Tibetan people, I pay Your
Excellencies the highest respects and pledge our whole-hearted support.

¡¡¡¡On November23 1949 Chairman Mao Zedong and Commander-in-Chief
Zhu Dc telegrammed the 10th Panchen Erdeni. The text read.
¡¡¡¡Mr. Panchen
Erdeni,
¡¡¡¡We are
very pleased with your October 1 telegram. The Tibetan people love
the motherland and oppose foreign aggression. They are dissatisfied
with the policy of the reactionary KMT government and desire to
be a member of the big family of a united, strong and prosperous
New China, where all the nationalities are equal. The Central People's
Government and the Chinese People's Liberation Army will certainly
comply with this wish of the Tibetan people. We hope you and the
patriotic personages throughout Tibet will make a concerted effort
for the liberation of Tibet and the unity of the Han and Tibetan
people.

¡¡¡¡The telegram from Chairman Mao and Commander-in-Chief Zhu was
of great significance. At the upper strata of Tibetan religious
circles, the 10th Panchen Erdeni was the first to respond to the
call of the Central Government and definitely expressed his welcome
of the PLA's entry into Tibet. The telegram of the two Chinese leaders
expressed their trust for the 10th Panchen Erdeni and their great
hope in his role. They also praised the Tibetan people's tradition
of anti-imperialism and patriotic spirit.
¡¡¡¡In November 1949, the Living Buddha Razheng Qoiben Yexei Churchen
accused the imperialists of destroying the internal unity of the
Tibetan people. In 1950, Tibetan intellectuals in Beijing met to
denounce the Lhasa authority's betrayal of the motherland. Noted
personages in the upper strata of the XikangTibetan areas, including
the Living Buddha Geda, the Living Buddha Shak Dodai, and the Living
Buddha Bamda Doje, sent their representatives to Beijing, expressing
their support for the People's liberation Army's entering of Tibet
as they did in 1936 in backing the Red Army going to north China
to fight against the Japanese invasion.
