7 Percent of Qinghai-Tibet Railway to
Be in Bridges, Tunnels
Tunnels and bridges will account for seven percent of the Qinghai-Tibet
Railway's mileage, with the Yangbajin Tunnel, the longest tunnel,
reaching 1,720 meters.
In the second phase of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway project, a 1,118-km-long
section will be built between Golmud in the western part of the
Qinghai Province and Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous
Region. The section in Qinghai will be 564 km long and that in Tibet,
554 km long.
The first phase of the project spans from Xining, the capital of
Qinghai Province, to Golmud, opened to traffic in 1984.
Tracks of 965 kilometers of the project will be laid at an altitude
of more than 4,000 meters above sea level. Tracks of 550 kilometers
will be laid on permanently-frozen earth.
