Women Working Along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Line

Though few, there are indeed women who are working along the Qinghai-Tibet railway line, the highest railway line in the world.

Though they are not working directly with the construction of the railway line, these women are contributing an indispensable part to the construction proper.

These women are working as canteen chefs and clinic paramedics right by the side of the construction sites.

Without these women, the construction cannot be carried out without a hitch, in that these women who try their very best to cook the right dishes to coax construction workers to eat to keep fit and who try their very best to relieve construction workers of their high altitude reactions.

The 1,080-kilometer Qinghai-Tibet railway line is being constructed through the north of Tibet that averages more than 4,500 meters above sea level.

Poor appetite, sleeplessness, dizziness, headache and fatigue are the most common but only a few of the high altitude ailments.

Construction workers would attribute the smooth progress of the railway line to these women who are few but nevertheless indispensable along the construction sites.

The construction of the Qinghai-Tibet railway line started in June this year and expects to complete in six years time.
