Prospects for the Medical and Health
Undertakings of Tibet

  Although great development has been made in Tibet's medical and health work, there are still difficulties and problems such as shortage of funds, backwardness of grass-roots medical units in the farming and pasture lands, low medical level of the medical personnel, lack of medical backbones, the arduous task of disease prevention and cure. These all hinders the medical and health development of Tibet.

  in light with this situation, the related departments in Tibet have worked out the overall plan for the 1996-2000 period and the year of 2010. According to the plan, a hygiene service system, including medical preventive care, health protection, and hygiene supervision, will be established to the needs of the people and socioeconomic development in Tibet. At that time people will enjoy necessary hygiene care and services. Therefore, the health condition of people in Tibet will improve.

  In Tibet, the average life span in 2000 is expected to reach 67 fears; the year of 2010,69-70 fears; infant mortality in 2000 and 2010 will decrease by one-- third and one-- fourth than that in 1990 and 2000 respectively; the mortality of infants less than five years old in 2000 and 2010 will see a drop of one-- third and one-- fifth from that in 1990 and that in 2000 respectively; the death rate of women in childbirth in 2000 and 2010 will drop by one half and one-- third from that in 1990 and 2010 respectively.
