Lhamo Namco Nnture Reserve

Namco Lake, which is 70 km long and 30 km wide, is the second largest saltwater lake in China and the highest lake in the world with an elevation of 4,718 meters. It nestles between the Tanggula Mountain and Northern Tibet grassland. Namco means in Tibetan "Holy Lake", famous for its beautiful scenery. Namco Nature Reserve lies in Damxung County of Lhasa City and Bangar County of Nagchu, 210 kilometers away from Lhasa City.

Namco Nature Reserve belongs to the half-wet and half-dry transition belt, with enough light, heat and water resources. The air pressure there is low and the sunlight in a year is about 3,000 hours. The rain season and dry season there are very clearly. The rain season is Jun. to Oct. and the dry season is from Nov. to May of the next year.

One Town of Damxung County and six Towns of Bangar County are under the administration of Namco Nature Reserve, in which there are no plantation and forestry, even no industry. Because there are little influence of people, the nature reserve keeps its origin nature. Namco Nature Reserve has the complete and peculiar ecological system and physiognomy structure, typical climate, abundant wildlife resource, including some key protection species, and some relics. So, it is valuable to protect and study the Namco Nature Reserve.

In order to protect the bio-diversity wildlife and typical nature relics, People's Government of Tibet Autonomous Region has decided to set up a biosphere Nature Reserves in the 7th standing committee meeting in 2001 to protect the highland ecological system and the bio-diversity wildlife, promoting the development of the local society, economy and culture. To strengthen the protection of Namco Nature Reserve, a Management Committee, led by a vice Chairman of Tibet Autonomous Region, was set up in Feb. 2002.
