Seal Inscribed with "Sa",
Yuan Dynasty, jade seal with a dragon knob, 6 cm high,
each side: 6.5cm
This jade seal has
no edges on either side and two thick lines are inscribed
on the upper and lower sides. One Tibetan alphabet
"Sa" on it represents Sa-skya. Above the
"Sa" are carved three circles, symbolizing
the Three Jewels of Buddhism (majesty, fortune and
perfection). On one side of the seal surface is inscribed
with a line of new Mongol script, meaning "wisdom"
in Chinese, which was the monastic title used by vPhags-pa
when he became a monk. This extant jade seal inscribed
with "Sa" is probably a seal used by vPhags-pa
or another Imperial Tutor to affix his name to documents.
