Seal of Imperial Tutor Sang-rje-dpal, Yuan Dynasty,
gray jade seal with a dragon knob, 8 cm high, each side: 8.7 cm

Sang-rje-dpal (1267-1314), nephew of Imperial Tutor Grags-pa-vod-ser, once acted as the abbot of the Sa-skya Monastery. During the period from 1305 to 1314, he successively acted as Imperial Tutor of Yuan Emperors Chengzong, Wuzong and Renzong. In 1314, he passed away in Dadu at the age of 48. The seal was inscribed in the vPhags-pa script. Three words "Sang-rje-dpal" are on the upper part of the seal, occupying three fourths of its total seal surface. While two words "Imperial Tutor" are on its lower part, taking only one fourth of the total seal surface. It is very unique in layout.
