
Seal of Prince Bailan (Pavi-lend-bang),
Yuan Dynasty,gilt copper seal, 10.6 cm high, each
side: 11.3 cm
Prince Bailan was
a secular title of nobility conferred upon heads of
the Sa-skya-pa Sect by the Yuan Court. According to
Tibetan historical records, the first Prince Bailan
was Phyag-na-rdo-rje, namely, vPhags-pa's younger
brother. After he went to Liang Zhou wih Kun-dgav-rgyal-mtshan,
he changed his clothes to Mongolian style costumes
by order of Go-dan. He was conferred upon the title
of Prince Bailan and got married with a princess named
Mo-kha-dun. After that, bSod-nams-bzang-po, Kun-dgav-legs-phavi-vbyung-nas-rgyal-mtshan-dpal-bzang-po
and Grags-pas-rgyal-mtshan were also conferred upon
this title and they got married with princesses. Yuan
Emperor Taiding bestowed this seal upon bSod-nams-bzang-pa
while conferring once again the title of Prince Bailan
upon him. The seal was inscribed with "Seal of
Prince Bailan" in the vPhags-pa script.
