>> KING GESAR Restraurant
King Gesar's manager has been working with the folks at Makye Ame
for years, and you can tell from the moment you step inside the
faux yurt entryway. While the restaurant is out of the way and unlikely
to attract the same crowds as its predecessor, its menu and décor
are cut from the same brand of Tibetan cloth. A small trinket-clad,
prayer-flagged restaurant with a looming poster of Lhasa on the
back wall, King Gesar serves up a wide selection of home style Tibetan
cuisine. The location makes it an ideal place to duck into if you
get stuck in a sandstorm along the dismal strip of bars and restaurants
on Liang Ma Qiao Lu. Order a cup of yak butter tea and some yak,
and lend your ears to Tibetan performers from Qinghai who sing folk
songs and play the mandolin every evening at 8.30pm. Mixed yak tripe
is RMB 22, mixed yak meat is RMB 22, curry potato is RMB 18, and
stewed mutton with Tibetan seasoning is RMB 168.
